Sheepskin jacket based on the 1940s Type D-1

The Type D-1 was developed from the mid to late 1930s as cold weather gear for ground crews not engaged in flight missions, and issued in the early 1940s. Compared to contemporary flight jackets, the sheepskin features a shorter pile and reduced bulk, resulting in a simpler design that prioritises ease of movement and functionality.

The balance of thickness, softness and firmness has been carefully tested to achieve both a substantial presence and comfortable wear. Leather tape made from high gloss horsehide is applied to conceal the seams, creating a pronounced contrast with the grained sheepskin body. The collar strap is constructed from thick cowhide, selected specifically to allow each type of leather to develop its own distinct patina over time.
