Lot.618 Side Henry Neck Ivory

Based on wool jersey underwear from the 1940s. Undergarments of the period had limited elasticity and often featured a front opening, commonly known as a Henley neck. Considering its use as a shirt underlayer, the opening is shifted from the centre front to the side, presumably to prevent overlap when worn beneath a shirt. The back neck is reinforced with the same fabric applied from the reverse side.
The fabric is a jersey characterised by natural irregularity, knitted at a high density using yarn developed to reproduce the unevenness typical of an era when clean, uniform straight yarns could not yet be spun. The cuffs reproduce the two tier circular knit rib construction found in 1910s undershirts. As seen in vintage examples, two tone colouring is applied between the rib and the body, adding a subtle accent.
