Unglazed smoke fired black pottery from Yunnan

A piece of pottery from the Jianchuan area of Yunnan, rooted in the daily life of the Bai people. It is made without glaze. Instead, pine wood is added in the final firing stage and the kiln is sealed, allowing carbon from the smoke to penetrate the clay and naturally blacken the surface. The subtle silver tones and variations that appear in the light are traces left by fire, oxygen and time, giving each piece its own character. This tradition has been passed down for generations by a family of artisans known as Jianchuan Dong Yuechang Heitao Ji.
