R20S8 Weather Shirt With Pocket Sumi Indigo Hemp Cloth
Slightly dropped shoulders, relaxed sleeves, pleated cuffs with single button closure, pointed collar, button front, single chest pocket, curved hem.
Cotton hemp double cloth, high density and heavyweight with a smooth dry handle. Naturally stiff and softens with washing and wear. Woven in Aichi.
Hand dyed on a very small scale in Kyoto, this midweight double cloth can only be dyed in five metre lengths at a time, requiring repeated immersion and rinsing to build depth of colour. First dyed with sumi ink, then with Ryukyu indigo grown and produced exclusively by Ryukyu Indigo Lab in Okinawa. Founded by Yoshinari Kakazu in 2009, the lab was established to restore ancestral methods of Ryukyu indigo production. The process is carried out by only a few hands, from manually cultivating the fields and harvesting the plants to soaking, fermenting, extracting, and purifying them into precipitated indigo. The result is a rare and distinct shade of blue, made with purpose to keep ancestral knowledge alive.
